Costa Rica tie Jamaica in Gold Cup opener

Costa Rica vs Jamaica AFP

Costa Rica had to settle for a draw against Jamaica. Both teams had chances, both teams shared a half in which they looked great, moving the ball freely, astute with possession and controlling the midfield. Costa Rica dominated the first half while Jamaica recovered and played better the second half.

Costa Rica had a dream set piece goal, a two pass header score that a coach can only teach and dream about but not realistically ever expect for it to actually happen. But even with all their trickery, Costa Rica is only a shadow of the team it was last World Cup. With their ex coach currently coaching Honduras it seems the Costa Rican team is finding it hard to gel together. They haven’t found that explosiveness they had us used to since the departure of Jose Luis Pinto. After Honduras’ fair performance last night one might ask if the Costa Rican magic was nothing but a stern magical touch from a Columbian coach? But Costa Rica could not sit on excuses since they have games with Canada and El Salvador that must be played, and played well if they wish to move on in the Gold Cup.

Most of the players from the Jamaican team are coming from playing in this summers Copa America, and it showed. Jamaica looks good. They played a good Copa America and this draw against Costa Rica only enforced it. Jamaica has quietly been playing well, and fit well into the dark horse roll, one that they have thrived in in the past. One thing is clear, this group will be hard fought, and no one is currently a clear favorite.
